ACCET Ex-Training Facility
In November 1999, The Nova Scotia Community College opened its Atlantic Canada Center for Electrical Technologies (ACCET) Facility to provide training for the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment in hazardous and potentially explosive environments both for offshore and onshore industrial situations. It is one of only two such facilities in the world, incorporating state-of-the-art equipment including purge panels, fire and gas detection panels, modern communications and alarm panels and primary and secondary power distribution panels. The facility contains a pressurized cabin, and 12 customized work bays (currently operating six with the remaining six available for future expansion) with explosion-protected devices and apparatus simulating the latest in explosion protection methodology. The facility is unique in that it replicates an actual working situation requiring operations and tasks to be performed under ‘actual' conditions.
D&L's challenge was to design and fabricate gas and fire panels and associated devices as part of the simulated pressurized cabin. Due to D&L's independence from any one supplier, we were able to develop a unique solution integrating several types of Life Safety systems to replicate a safety system typically found in an offshore application.
These systems include the following:
Siemens Cerberus MXL addressable fire detection system
Siemens Cerberus System 3 conventional fire detection system
Detector Electronics combustible gas detection system
Federal Signal Emergency PA system
Customized Fire and Gas Mimic LED annunciator panel
The systems monitor field devices found in hazardous locations including the following:
Infrared Hydrocarbon Gas Detectors
Catalytic Gas Detectors
Break Glass Manual Pull Stations
Heat Detectors
Smoke Detectors
Strobe Lights and PA Speakers
The systems and installations were designed to reflect real world conditions in offshore applications. Software based programming keys and supervised bypass switches were provided to allow the students to conduct basic and regular maintenance with the systems in various states of "condition". The systems also incorporate Intrinsically Safe Barriers for some "non-explosion proof" equipment.
The systems in place at the ACCET Ex-Training Facility are a showcase of the various manufacturers and systems represented by D&L Engineering Sales Limited. This system integration was made possible through D&L Engineering's years of experience in providing innovative, practical and cost-effective solutions in demanding environments.
